Międzynarodowa Stacja Kosmiczna (ang. International Space Station, w skrócie ISS) to pierwsza w historii stacja kosmiczna od samego początku tworzona przez wiele krajów. Pierwsze jej elementy zostały wyniesione na orbitę i połączone ze sobą w przestrzeni kosmicznej w 1998 r., a pierwsza stała załoga zamieszkała na niej w 2000 roku. Obecnie ISS liczy 16 modułów, a docelowa ma ich liczyć 17. W chwili obecnej całkowita masa stacji wynosi ok. 418 ton, a objętość przestrzeni użytkowej to 837 m3. Średnia temperatura na stacji wynosi ok. 27 stopni Celsjusza. Stacja ISS powstała w wyniku połączenia planów budowy stacji kosmicznych: rosyjskiej Mir-2, amerykańskiej Freedom oraz europejskiej Columbus. Jej budowa została podzielona na trzy etapy. W pierwszym koncentrowano się na przygotowaniu modułów i dostarczeniu ich na stację Mir-1 (lata 1995-1998). W okresie 1998-2001 miał miejsce montaż większości modułów oraz rozpoczęcie wstępnej eksploatacji ISS. W latach 2001-2011 miał miejsce etap III, czyli zakończenie montowania większości modułów i start normalnej, stałej eksploatacji z 6-osobową załogą.
