In the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as in other armies of the world, the tasks of sapper units include conducting engineering reconnaissance of the area, equipping and removing minefields. Ukrainian sappers also provide engineering support to their units for defensive or offensive combat operations. The position of a sapper in the military is considered one of the most difficult. Often they are forced to work ahead of their infantry, being at the very forefront of combat operations, as they pave the way, literally and figuratively. Dogs help sappers find explosive devices. The canine service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine was established in 2017, and with the outbreak of large-scale hostilities, the need for mine detection dogs has increased several times.

Współczesne Ukraińskie Wojska Lądowe (uk. ZSU) powstały w grudniu 1991 roku, na bazie pozostałych na terenie byłej Ukraińskiej Republiki Radzieckiej jednostek lądowych oraz baz czy składów zaopatrzenia wojskowego i amunicji. Od tego czasu liczebność wojsk lądowych była systematycznie obniżana, aż do 2014 r., czyli początku rosyjskiej agresji na terenie Donbasu. W 2016 r. lądowe siły zbrojne liczyły ok. 169.000 żołnierzy czynnej służby. W chwili obecnej, w obliczu rosyjskiego zagrożenia, kładzie się nacisk na możliwie jak najdalej idące uzawodowienie armii, dostarczenie jednostkom możliwe jak najnowszego sprzętu, ale też podnoszenie jakości odbywanych szkoleń. Warto dodać, że zmiany w tej ostatniej płaszczyźnie trwają już od 2006 roku i można przyjąć, że w dużym stopniu wpływ miały na to wspólne szkolenia jednostek ukraińskich z wojskami NATO. Wojsko ukraińskie posłało stosunkowo spore kontyngenty do Iraku (2003-2005) oraz Kosowa (2000-2014).
